The city of Edinburgh is overtaken by festivals during the month of August. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (or just ‘the Fringe’) began as an add-on to the main Edinburgh International Festival for those not invited to take part, but it is now the biggest arts festival in the world.
Throughout August music, dance, theatre and comedy events take place across the city and there is a lively, carnival atmosphere across town. Tickets can be purchased on the event website or just turn up and try your luck at one of the less high profile events where tickets can be bought on the day – this is a great way to discover the stars of the future.
Several other festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival itself, which stages classical music, opera, theatre and dance events, also take place in Edinburgh during August.
Getting there: Edinburgh is easily accessible by road and rail from all over Britain. Direct trains run from London’s Kings Cross Station in around 4 hours 30 minutes. There are also regular flights between London and Edinburgh.
