The Yorkshire Coast is a mixture of pretty, historic coastal villages and lively 'seaside resorts', some little changed since their hey-day of the 1950s and 60s.

The interesting town of Whitby offers a bit of everything. A large stretch of beach, traditional amusement arcades and shops selling buckets-and-spades and ice cream on one side of the river, a cobbled old town filled with independent shops leading up to the cliff top St Mary's Church and the strikingly picturesque ruins of Whitby Abbey on the other.

Just down the coast, clinging to the cliff-side, the village of Robin Hood's Bay makes a lovely excursion, with its steep winding lanes filled with interesting shops and cafes.
