Dumfries and Galloway offers some of southern Scotland’s most appealing towns and villages, some interesting and picturesque ruins and is a good area for enjoying the great outdoors.

Galloway Forest Park in the west of the region is a wonderful place for walking, cycling, mountain biking and wildlife spotting, with its mixture of impressive mountains, pretty lochs and wild moorland.

The Solway Coast, on the regions southern edge, has some lovely sandy coves and clean waters, as well as a surprisingly mild climate (leading to the slightly optimistic nickname of the ‘Scottish Riviera’). The coast region is also the place to find several good heritage sights – picture-perfect Caerlaverock Castle, a classic, moated, medieval stronghold, and the romantic ruins of Sweetheart Abbey and Dundrennan Abbey.
