The rugged Dark Peak area covers the northern section of the Peak District and is made up of moorland and gritstone edges, popular with rock climbers.

The area has a wild feel and fewer towns and villages than the White Peak, and is popular with walkers looking for challenging hikes in open countryside – several go to impressive lookouts on the ‘edges’, including to stunning Stanage Edge. The Pennine Way runs north from Edale across a large section of the Dark Peak.
