The biggest draws of quiet, pretty West Sussex are its historic towns and Roman ruins.
The attractive town of Arundel is a lovely combination of medieval streets and Victorian buildings, looked over by the impressive hill top Arundel Castle. Nearby Chichester is an appealing collection of Georgian townhouses, medieval city walls and an impressive 12th century cathedral. It is also the jumping off point for several popular seaside villages.
Petworth House is West Sussex’s cultural highlight: the impressive 17th century stately home has a vast art collection, including work by Turner, Gainsborough and Van Dyck, among others.
Roman sites include Bignor Roman Villa and Fishbourne Roman Palace, both home to impressive collections of in-situ Roman mosaics.
